Three Reasons Regulators are Stumped By Illegal Robocalls

Regulators at the Federal Trade Commission, are stumped by the problem of junk faxes, illegal robocalls and TCPA violations. | Chicago IL

Our Chicago consumer protection, junk fax and TCPA violation attorneys want to share a recent piece from NPR’s “Morning Edition” that pointed to the challenges government regulators face when it comes to curtailing unwanted commercial correspondence.

Reporter Yuki Noguchi explains that illegal telemarketing robocalls persist regardless of the fact that the Federal Do Not Call Registry took effect more than a decade ago.

She also spoke with an official with the Federal Trade Commission who explains that three modern phenomenon have made it even more difficult for that agency to catch TCPA violations, even though it receives more consumer complaints about this than any other issue.

Three of the reasons the FTC is reportedly stumped by robocalls are:

  • Internet telephone service: The power to call multiple people at once is now cheap and easy using the Web.
  • Call ID snafus: It’s now easier than ever to fabricate the origin of a robocall so that the recipient is unaware that it’s an illegal/unwanted call simply by checking their telephone caller ID.
  • Overseas dialing: Many of these TCPA infractions originate overseas, which translates into difficult if not impossible tracking and law enforcement.

All of this points to a government agency that’s seemingly overwhelmed by the scale of the illegal robocall and junk fax problem, which is all the more reason for you to secure independent legal representation when you suspect you’ve been the victim of a TCPA violation.
