The Chicago consumer rights lawyers at Markoff Leinberger are aware of the fact that despite the establishment of the National Do Not Call Registry, some telemarketers continue to pester consumers with unwanted sales calls and texts. Not only are these calls a nuisance, they may be illegal under the terms of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). Federal law prohibits most telemarketing sales calls to registered telephone numbers, even residential landlines. If you are getting telemarketing calls of any kind to your cell phone or getting unwanted text advertisements, the law provides even more protection. Visit our TCPA page to find out more.

Please call Markoff Leinberger to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced consumer fraud attorneys: 1-877-905-5161. We can discuss the calls you've been receiving and whether or not you might be eligible for compensation.

But even before having to call a consumer protection lawyer, you may be able to engage in a little self-help. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) manages the National Do Not Call Registry, which allows you to register any phone number to avoid (or at least reduce) telemarketing sales calls. Registering your telephone number is easy.

The Registry: Getting Started

You will be asked to do three things when you register online for the Do Not Call list:

  • Share your phone number and email address.
  • Make sure your information in accurately recorded.
  • Verify your registration by responding to an email from the FTC.

If you prefer not to use the Internet to initiate this process, you can register for the Do Not Call list by telephone. Simply call 1-888-382-1222.

Once you have registered your telephone number with this service, it can take up to a month for that information to filter through to aggressive telemarketers.

It’s Worth Noting…

If you’ve already registered and are still receiving unwanted telemarketing calls, you can use the same FTC website to verify whether or not your number is in fact part of the registry.

It’s important to note that even registering your telephone number with the FTC may not stop all unwanted telephone calls as this registry is specifically designed to deter sales promotions. Certain calls are still allowed, including:

  • Political calls
  • Charitable calls
  • Informational calls
  • Telephone survey calls (taht do not then try to sell you something)

If you are not sure whether the calls you receive are allowed, you may want to contact a consumer rights lawyer for more information.

When you have questions about your rights and recourse in the face of possible Do Not Call violations, please call Markoff Leinberger to schedule a consultation with one of our experienced consumer fraud attorneys: 1-877-905-5161.
