Last month, several consumer rights organizations and agencies joined forces to promote a week of education and public awareness aimed at protecting Americans from the scams that so often necessitate a lawyer. Through their website, https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/national-consumer-protection-week, organizers informed consumers of their rights with regards to the following areas:
- Health & Safety
- Credit/Credit Cards
- Identity Theft
- International Dealings
- Scam Alerts
- Your Car and Home
- Your Business
Among this information were specific tips to help consumers avoid fraud in the future. Here are two of those consumer protection tips from the organizers of National Consumer Protection Week:
- “Card skimming” is a type of fraud perpetuated against consumers who use ATM machines. High-tech thieves can target these machines to capture your personal and financial information. Consumers can skirt this scam by avoiding ATMs that appear to have a plastic sheath installed in front of the card slot; never writing down their PINs; and avoiding strangers who may be lurking around ATMs.
- The country’s new open market for healthcare and insurance also has paved the way for fresh consumer scams. The FDA says that health-related frauds stem from “the deceptive promotion, advertising, distribution, or sale of a product represented as being effective to prevent, diagnose, treat, cure or lessen an illness or condition.” Oftentimes, the efficacy of these remedies has not been scientifically-proven. How can you spot a health-related scam? The FDA suggests that consumers: Be Smart… Be Aware… and Be Careful.
These days, one of the government’s popular pearls of wisdom for consumers who are worried about scams is: “If it sounds too good to be to be true, it’s probably a scam.”
