The Chicago class action lawyers at Markoff Leinberger are watching with interest the development of two federal class action lawsuits related to the recent racial unrest in Ferguson, Mo. and the surrounding St. Louis County communities.
The nonprofit social action agencies Equal Justice Under Law and ArchCity Defenders along with attorneys from the St. Louis University School of Law Legal Clinics filed this pair of class action lawsuits.
The filings name the City of Ferguson, Mo. and the neighboring City of Jennings, Mo., and argue that jail conditions in those towns are inhumane. They further contend that the municipal justice system in these towns relies disproportionately on court and traffic fines levied against poor, predominantly black citizens who struggle to cover their legal debts and subsequently suffer repeated incarcerations.
The allegedly inhumane jail conditions outlined in the lawsuits include:
- Overcrowded cells
- Unhygienic living conditions
- Lack of food and medical care
Lawyers for the plaintiffs contend that these legal conditions violate several constitutional rights.
If you or a loved one is affected by these federal lawsuits, the Chicago class action lawyers and consumer fraud attorneys at Markoff Leinberger can help. Feel free to contact us online through this website or call the office directly to schedule your case consultation: 1 (888) 517-9115.
