Federal Consumer Complaints Surged in 2015

Even debt collectors may not circumvent the law. If they do, each infraction could be worth $500 to $1,500.

The consumer protection and fair credit reporting lawyers at Markoff Leinberger in Chicago are intrigued to learn that consumer complaints to the Federal Trade Commission increase by nearly 20 percent between 2014 and 2015.

According to a statement released by the FTC today, that agency received more than 3 million consumer complaints in 2015, which is up from about 2.5 million complaints in 2014.

The three most common reasons that consumers reached out the FTC with a complaint in 2015 were:

The FTC suspects that more consumers are turning to that agency because technology makes it easier than ever to read up on FTC rules and when necessary, lodge a consumer complaint. Its message to the public: “If a business doesn’t deliver on its promises, if someone cheats you out of your money, or if you’ve spotted a scam, tell it to the FTC.”

The government’s web site where consumers can lodge complaints is ftc.gov/complaint.

Other bad business practices or industries that Americans frequently complain to the FTC about include:

  • Telephone and mobile services
  • Prizes, sweepstakes and lotteries
  • Banks and lenders
  • Shop-at-home and catalog sales
  • Television and electronic media
  • Auto-related complaints

But just because you lodge a complaint with the FTC, you still have no guarantee that you will be able to achieve justice for the particular way in which you were wronged.

Your best chance for that is to enlist one of the Chicago consumer protection and fair credit reporting lawyers at Markoff Leinberger.
