Consumers: Beware of Drinking Too Much Energy

Chicago consumer rights lawyers are monitoring the recent lawsuit against the makers of Rockstar Energy Drink.

Our Chicago consumer rights lawyers are watching with interest the mounting evidence that consuming too many sugary, highly-caffeinated energy drinks in a short period of time may creative a serious health hazard.

Although this issue has previously been in the news, it resurfaced this week when a Los Angeles man filed a strict liability lawsuit, which also claims negligence, fraud and a breach of implied warranties, against the maker of Rockstar Energy Drink.

His lawsuit alleges that after consuming four cans of the beverage is about 7 hours, the man suffered a heart attack. According to a story reported by NBC Southern California, the lawsuit says: “He was taken into surgery immediately, where doctors performed an emergency surgical operation.”

The plaintiff’s attorneys added that their client might have avoided drinking so many cans of Rockstar had he known about the potential health risks.

This lawsuit follows a recent government study that claimed the number of people seeking emergency medical assistance after indulging in too many energy drinks doubled between 2007 and 2011.

And in 2012, a family in Hagerstown, Maryland initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against the makers of Monster energy drink after their 14-year-old daughter allegedly died from caffeine toxicity after downing two cans of that product in a day’s time. Legislators have since joined their fight to change the way energy drinks are marketed to young people.
