The Chicago class action lawyers at Markoff Leinberger are plugged into recent news that the Takata Corp. is expanding its airbag recall, a move that may spur more consumers to become involved in one of several class actions now pending against the airbag manufacturer.

In the wake of a series of deaths that have been linked to defective Takata airbags, several carmakers began recalling vehicles more than two years ago that included this particular piece of Takata-brand safety equipment.

The defective airbags reportedly explode and result in injury or even death after the incident.

Takata is now linked to the largest car-related recall in history, with more than 34 million vehicles effected worldwide. Nineteen-million of those vehicles are in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers vehicles from a dozen different automakers.

Takata also received the largest ever civil penalty from the NHTSA due to the widespread danger posed by its defective airbags. Some of the injuries that defective Takata airbag victims have sustained include:

  • Burns
  • Cuts
  • Bruising
  • Blindness
  • Scarring
  • Death

Consumers have the option of taking an impacted vehicle to its manufacturer for a replacement airbag. But individuals who have been seriously injured by these airbags may also choose to join a class action lawsuit.
