Our Windy City

Chicago was incorporated in 1837. The city quickly grew as a trading post to accommodate the westward expansion taking place. It expanded rapidly over the next few decades, becoming one of the largest cities in the United States by the start of the 20th Century. Chicago remains the country’s third most-populous city.

During the 1920s Prohibition Era, Chicago became a hotbed for organized crime, where gangsters such as Al Capone battled law enforcement agents in the city’s streets on a regular basis. In 1929, the infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre took place in Chicago: Members of Al Capone’s gang gunned down Bugs Moran’s rival gang in a bloodbath that gained national notoriety.

During the 1940s, Chicago was the site of important scientific research. In 1942, renowned physicist Enrico Fermi conducted the world’s first controlled nuclear reaction at the University of Chicago while working on the Manhattan Project. This work led to the development of the first atomic bomb, which was used to end World War II in 1945.

Chicago’s prominence in American society has also extended into pop culture. The city has been featured in such iconic movies as The Blues BrothersRisky BusinessFerris Bueller’s Day Off, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Untouchables, The Fugitive  and High Fidelity. In the 1980s and 1990s, Chicago proudly claimed the most iconic athelete on the planet, Michael Jordan, who secured an amazing six championships in eight years of play for the Chicago Bulls.

Cutting-Edge America

Throughout its history, Chicago has been on the forefront of innovation. Consider that:

  • The country’s first skyscraper – the Home Insurance Building – was erected in downtown Chicago in 1884. The 10-story building, located at LaSalle and Adams streets, was demolished in 1931.
  • Chicago was the birthplace of the refrigerated railcar.
  • Local companies Sears and Montgomery Ward were the first to experiment with mail-order retailing.
  • Two Chicago-based companies, Motorola and Zenith, were credited with creating the first car radio and TV remote control.
  • Chicago is home to the 1,450 foot Willis Tower, one of the largest skyscraper in North America. It was completed in 1974.
